This is a hand on three dimensional application of sustained pressure and movement targeting the fascial system which connects muscles, bones and therefore affects joints. The goal of myofascial release is to eliminate fascial restriction by elongating and softening the connective tissue. It utilises the relationship of time and lengthening, where more length change in tissue is achieved over a longer period of time. This phenomenon is known as creep.
Myofascial release is a highly interactive stretching that requires feedback from the patient’s body to determine the direction, force and duration of the stretch. The treatment is delivered in a step by step progression, waiting for releases in the patients’ body and following each release until it has reached completion
It is very useful when direct deep massage irritates the body or when chronic restrictive conditions require a slower more passive approach.
